Lap Band® Surgery
The Lap Band system is the safest and least-invasive form of weight loss surgery currently available. Lap Band surgery helps patients to achieve sustained weight loss by placing an adjustable gastric band around the upper part of the stomach. The Lap Band reduces the capacity of the stomach, encouraging the patient to eat less, stay full longer between meals and ultimately lose weight.
The Lap Band system has a number of advantages, including:
- Effective long-term results
- Fewer side effects when compared to other forms of weight loss surgery
- Adjustable for greater weight loss control
- Minimal discomfort and trauma
How Lap Band Works
The Lap Band system is comprised of a silicone elastomer ring that is connected to an access port fixed just beneath the skin of the abdomen. The silicone band is fastened around the upper portion of the stomach during a laparoscopic surgical procedure, which is a minimally invasive form of surgery that does not require a large incision to be made into the abdomen.
Lap Band surgery is a safer alternative to other forms of bariatric surgery because it does not require any permanent alterations to the stomach. During Lap Band surgery, there is no cutting, stapling or rerouting of the digestive system, which makes this form of bariatric surgery completely reversible. The minimally invasive nature of Lap Band surgery provides for a faster recovery as well as reduced pain and discomfort associated with the operation.
Lap Band Adjustments
Lap Band adjustments are a primary component of the success of the Lap Band system. The Lap Band fills are what can help you to stay on track with your weight loss goals, and maintain your weight loss long term.
The Lap Band was designed to be adjusted. This gives your physician the ability to regulate your weight loss efforts following your operation. When your Lap Band is at its optimal fill level, you will become full easily and remain full in between meals. If your Lap Band is too loose, then you may grow hungry in between meals, while a Lap Band that is too tight may cause discomfort.
When your Lap Band is first inserted it will not be filled, allowing your body time to adjust to the band and the new pouch that it has formed. Lap Band patients meet with their surgeon about a month following their initial operation for their first fill. Following your initial Lap Band adjustment, your physician will develop a post-surgical schedule that is tailored to your specific health and weight loss needs.
