When you are working to lose weight after weight loss surgery, you will need all the support you can get. Even if your family is supportive of your efforts, you still may want to consider the help of a weight loss support group. There are many available in the Salt Lake area. Here are a few reasons to seek one out:
- Support groups offer the support of people who know what you are going through. Your family may be completely behind your decision to have bariatric surgery, but unless they have had the procedure themselves your family will not know exactly what you are dealing with. Seeking the support of people who have been through the same thing can add strength to your resolve.
- Expert leadership. Usually, support groups are led by individuals who have knowledge and training in weight management. Your group leader will be someone who you can come to with questions, and who will have ideas for navigating situations that you will run into both before and after your surgery.
- A group brain trust. People in your group will be able to draw on their personal experiences to help you with the bumps in the road that you will encounter after surgery. They may be able to suggest pleasurable but low calorie party food, or ways to adjust when accompanying friends to restaurants.
- Diet and workout buddies. It’s easier to head to your afternoon exercise class when you know you have a friend there waiting for you. By working together to motivate one another, you and other support group members can help one another lose weight and get healthy.
