Obesity surgery in Salt Lake City has provided success for those who have had trouble losing the extra pounds with other methods, including weight loss medications. The more rapid weight loss possible with bariatric surgery has also been proven to end many of the conditions associated with obesity, such as hypertension, high cholesterol and Type II diabetes. Researchers have since become more focused on determining the best type of bariatric surgery for people diagnosed with specific obesity-related conditions.
Two new studies have confirmed the benefits of bariatric surgery for those diagnosed with diabesity, a term that is gaining popularity for obesity-induced Type II diabetes. They collectively found that a majority of patients were able to break dependency on diabetes drugs with the help of surgery, whereas none of those on weight loss medications were able to end dependency on diabetes drugs. Further, some patients were free from diabetic drugs as soon as three days following surgery. One of the studies also uncovered the fact that a majority of surgical patients stayed in diabetes remission for at least two years.
Earlier studies found that irreversible types of surgery, such as the gastric bypass, resulted in stronger improvements when compared to the reversible lap band procedure. The new studies compared three groups on obesity-related measures of blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides. Weight loss medicines alone produced little to no improvement, actually leading to greater reliance on cholesterol-lowering drugs in one study. The best results were found in gastric bypass patients who took no weight loss medications. Of the bypass patients to achieve freedom from Type II diabetes, about half of them were taking insulin before surgery.
